FAQS
Starting Therapy
Beginning counselling can bring up a mix of curiosity, uncertainty, and relief. This section covers common questions about getting started, what to expect in your first sessions, and how to know if this feels like the right place and pace for you.
-
If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unsure where to begin, you’re likely in the right place. People come to The Nest for many different reasons. You don’t need a diagnosis, a clear plan, or the right words to start.
-
We support individuals, couples, families and youth. People come to us across many stages of life and relationship. You’re welcome whether you’re navigating something specific or something harder to name.
-
We commonly support relationship challenges, parenting concerns, postpartum anxiety or depression, anxiety and stress, low mood, trauma, addiction, perfectionism, self-esteem, family conflict, school-related concerns, and life transitions. This list isn’t exhaustive. If you’re unsure whether your concern fits, we’re happy to help you decide.
-
There’s no single answer. Some people come for a few sessions, others for longer-term or ongoing support. We’ll check in together and adjust based on your goals, needs, and pace.
-
The first session is a chance to get to know each other. We’ll talk about what brought you in, what you’re hoping for, and what feels important right now. There’s no pressure to share everything at once.
-
Both can be helpful, depending on what’s going on. Some couples begin together, while others find a mix of individual and couples sessions supportive. We’ll help you think through what makes the most sense for your situation.
-
Counselling works best when it’s collaborative. Being open, reflective, and willing to practice what you’re learning between sessions can make a meaningful difference. It’s normal for things to feel harder before they feel easier.
-
Yes. Feeling comfortable and safe with your counsellor matters. If something doesn’t feel like the right fit, we’ll support you in exploring other options within the clinic when possible.
